SINGAPORE 8 October 2008 – Andrea Jung, Chairman and CEO of Avon Products, Inc., ranked one of the ‘world’s most powerful women’ vows to champion the economic empowerment of women in the direct selling industry worldwide over the next three years, to help them achieve financial independence.

Jung made this commitment to 500 delegates including CEOs and senior executives from 50 countries at their three-day 13th global congress of the World Federation of Direct Selling Associations (WFDSA), that opened in Singapore today.

Her ‘bold global goal’ will kick off her tenure as the new chair of the WFDSA. Jung said, “I believe that during this time of economic crisis, direct selling can provide financial independence and bring important economic renewal when the world needs us most. In fact, direct selling today is probably one of the best examples of micro enterprise in action on a global scale. Micro-enterprise is now being recognized on the world stage as perhaps the single best solution to dramatically improve living standards and lift women, families and societies out of poverty.”

There is no glass ceiling in the direct selling industry with reward directly related to effort, with women earning dollar for dollar with men for the same work.

Jung said, “My personal mission is to tell the world about the transformative impact of direct selling, about how it changes women’s lives, helps them feed, clothe and educate their children, and about how in the process we help improve social conditions and change the world. Today, more than 85 percent of direct selling micro entrepreneurs are women. That’s 50 million women with 50 million stories to tell!”

Jung is a magna cum laude graduate of Princeton University and is fluent in Mandarin. In 2008, she was ranked #19 on the Forbes list of “The World’s 100 Most Powerful Women.” In 2008, she was ranked #6 on Fortune magazine's "50 Most Powerful Women in Business” list. She has been ranked on The Wall Street Journal’s "50 Women to Watch” since 2004, and was one of 18 executives included in U.S News & World Report’s “America’s Best Leaders 2007.”

I believe that through our collective effort through WFDSA and our unified global membership, that day is not far off.”
